Original Abstract

Jubilee 10th EMSLIBS took place in Brno, Czech Republic, the heart of the South Moravian Region. 229 scientists, researchers, engineers and students from 42 countries all over the world came to contribute with their Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) related research, its applications and also to define the future of LIBS analysis. The symposium was organized by a team consisting of researchers from LIBS groups based at the Brno University of Technology, Masaryk University, Central European Institute of Technology, and Ioannes Marcus Marci Spectroscopic Society. This team was led by Prof. Jozef Kaiser and Prof. Viktor Kanicky, the recognized experts in the laser-based spectroscopy and members of international scientific committees. The scientific program[1] was divided into three main sessions: scientific talks, poster sessions, and workshops. In order to get a swift start of the symposium, there were two workshops, prior to the scientific program. During the conference, 55 oral presentations were held in total[2] including heritage or keynote speakers – Prof. Niemax, Prof. Omenetto, Prof. Hahn and Prof. Laserna. In total, there were 130 poster contributions which were distributed in two poster sessions[2]. We appreciated that almost half of the total poster presenters were young researchers. For the first time in the EMSLIBS history, a competition in LIBS spectra classification[3] was organized. The topic was material identification which is one of the most frequent applications of LIBS. Since most of the tasks connected with material identification are carried out based on a material library, they are often regarded as classification. Hence, the aim of the competition was to find a robust classification algorithm capable of dealing with challenging datasets. As a good tradition, we organized social events that served as hubs for networking, creating and extending new contacts for future work and cooperation. Moreover, we wanted to present Czech hospitality and make the stay of participants in the Czech Republic more pleasant. There were plenty of social events at interesting places of Brno and after the symposium attendees had an opportunity to join one of the symposium trips to Brno or Prague. The International Scientific Committee of EMSLIBS held a meeting during the symposium where, among other things, the organizers of the next symposium were chosen.
