Original Abstract

Thesis is focused on research and development of subcritical nuclear reactor systems driven by external neutron source in the form of particle accelerator or high intense laser. Such a reactor has a high level of inherent safety, unprecedented neutron economy, and high-energy neutron spectrum. These properties make together a unique facility, which is capable to incinerate-transmute spent nuclear fuel from thermal nuclear reactors and used thorium or depleted uranium as a fuel. Submitted work concludes to the necessity of further intensive research and the need of wide international collaboration. It is also necessary to focus not only on accelerator driven reactors, but also to laser driven subcritical nuclear reactors, which could serve for spent fuel transmutation and sustainable safe nuclear power of the future.
