Original Abstract

Damage diagnosis is essential for assessing the performance and safety of structures. Its critical component is extract damage features. In concrete structures, the appearance and expansion of cracks are the most direct information. Cracks width are commonly used as an indicator of damage; however other factors, such as distribution and pattern of the cracks should be considered equally important. In this study, we apply fractal theory to extract damage characteristic information based on surface – crack distributions. It is validated through experimental study and numerical simulation. The results show the fractal techniques extend the damage assessment of concrete structures.
