Original Abstract

The problem of nitrate in groundwater is a known. Denitrifying bioreactors have a relatively simple, passive treatment technology for the removal of nitrate especially from agricultural outflows. Denitrifying bioreactors have many advantages. They are cost-effective, durable and easy to maintain, and their designs can be tailored to suit site hydrological criteria. Their physical character is very similar to constructed treatment wetlands, with a major difference in the filter material.
