Original Abstract

This contribution presents a summary of a research study whose general focus was placed on an experimental testingof selected joint sealants.The use of polymeric sealants for the filling of joints or cracks has been widely accepted and considered as most effective. Polyurethane sealants have been generally used for sealing since they can offer a relatively long service life and excellent adhesion to a wide range of materials. However, polyurethane sealants and adhesives contain isocyanates which raise severe toxicity issues. Therefore, three different types of high-strength sealants from a group of silyl modified polymers were selected and tested. Modified polymers are considered to be more environmentally friendly with similar strength and elongation properties as polyurethanes. A group of test samples was subjected to two normalised test procedures that may influence the resulting behaviour of the joint in the exterior. The second group of test samples was exposed to the external environment for a particular period. The most beneficial achievement of the presented study are the results obtained of test samples that were prepared and tested in the exterior. Even though, the steps recommended by manufacturer were perfectly adhered to, the samples embodied diametrically different failure modes than those tested in laboratory. The hypothesis that it is almost impossible to prepare a perfectly clean installation environment in the exterior was confirmed.
