Original Abstract

Essential requirements for the status of nearly-zero energy building indicate a minimum energy consumption ensured by an adequate thermal protection with combination of using renewable energy sources. The main objective of presented contribution is the examination of design strategies for sensible using of two materials, phase change material (PCM) and photovoltaic (PV) in advanced façade system. Climate variable conditions worldwide correspond to different design principles for building envelopes, especially, in terms of solar energy utilization and its thermal energy storing. Recently, many types of PCM with different temperature-enthalpy function are available on the market. It is difficult to directly specify, what type of PCM is suitable for PV façade, not only, in the case for decreasing operating temperature of PV cell, however also, in other cases of its integration in functional parts of a façade. Appropriate geometrical characterization of PCM layer is complex problem, mainly due to completely using its overall heat latent capacity. Current building energy simulation programs can provide the initial prediction of façade performance, however they have also some computational limitations due to simplification of mathematical equations. Opportunities of simulating PCM and BiPV systems are described predominantly by using EnergyPlus simulation software and additionally with other the most used programs. Therefore, the architect or building engineer should consider these design principles and methods for making a rough calculation of a PV electricity production and thermal efficiency of PCM before the whole building energy performance calculation will be assessed.
