Original Abstract

The importance of the role of SMEs in the dynamics of the transition process in East and Central Europe has increasingly become a matter of debate during the past decade. Glas et al (1999), for example, have suggested that SMEs are an important factor in the sustainability of economic transition through their growing contribution to exports and business co-operation in general, and to the formation of a vibrant domestic industrial economy in particular. Perhaps due to a combination of such factors as the rather late development of SME-based research in transition economies, and an earlier emphasis on foreign direct investment and industrial restructuring, it is only comparatively recently that much detailed attention has been given to firm-level research.
