Original Abstract

Ceramic fibers have gained much attention due to their diverse potential applications including catalysis, electrode and membrane materials, filters, sensors, biomedical materials etc. As compared to bulk, the fibers exhibit novel physical and chemical properties arising from their unique features such as high surface area to volume ratio and small fiber diameter. Fabrication of nanosized doped zirconia fibers by electrospinning from alkoxide based precursors and physical-chemical characterization of the ceramic fibers for energy applications is the main objective of the work. Nanofibers of cubic zirconia with different microstructure were prepared by electrospinning of zirconium propoxide/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) based precursors with a various composition. Fully crystalline composition of cubic zirconia was detected after fiber heat treatment at 700°C. No significant effect of precursor composition on the fiber morphology and pha composition was observed. The fiber morphology was changed with increasing temperature of the heat treatment from flexible smooth dense structure at 700°C through porous nanograin structure at 900°C and nanoporous structure with coarser nanograins at 1100°C to brittle chain-like fiber formed of submicrometer grains at 1300-1450°C. The sintering behavior was described.
