Original Abstract

In this article, a novel method for the efficient analysis in special case of mode spot converters is presented. These converters are comprised of a small spot active air-clad rib waveguide and a large spot passive waveguide buried underneath. The waveguide is buried to such a depth that it still experiences the impact of the air-semiconductor boundary. This method combines the advantages features of two developed semi-analytical approaches: the Spectral Index (SI) and the Free Space Radiation Mode (FSRM) methods. Results of the analysis of waveguides or converters are compared with results obtained from semi-vectorial Finite Difference (FD) method. The new method is straightforward to implement and produces results for the propagation constant and field profiles, in a matter of seconds. This method is ideally suitable for iterative design purposes as well as for bulk structures and nanostructures.
