Original Abstract

The industrial production of VCSEL diodes started several years ago. Especially VCSELs are equipped with the distributed Bragg reflector and the quantum well structure at the same time 0. It improves their linewidth and decreases threshold and efficiency of the electro-optic conversion. VCSELs have advantages over conventional edge-emitting diode lasers in circular output beams and quite easy coupling into fibers. They have a wide range of applications in laser interferometry and spectroscopy. At present VCSELs become very attractive in optical communications in Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) systems. Such applications require lasers emitting at standardized wavelengths with high stability. Single wavelength emission and stability is one of the most important factors that determine the number of channels and their spacing in the WDM network. Nevertheless, most VCSELs, singlemode at threshold, quickly degenerate to multitransverse mode operation at higher drive currents 0. It is even more difficult to obtain single transverse mode operation in oxide-defined VCSELs, in comparison to proton-implanted devices, because of the large step in index of refraction between the oxide and active region. Like the principle of the ECLs it is a way to stabilize the wavelength of these laser diodes using some optical elements as external optical feedback or a passive wavelength selective element. The influence of the external optical feedback on spectral characteristics of VCSELs has been studied 0. At present the most interesting solution of this external feedback is to use an external fiber with fiber grating.
