Original Abstract

The contribution is focused on the estimation of the critical stress values for crack initiation from sharp V-notch tips in the case of out of plane bended specimens. The V-notch generally represents a singular stress concentrator with stress singularity exponent different from 0.5. The generalized form of the classical approach of the linear elastic fracture mechanics has to be used. The critical stress values are determined on the base of stability criterion derived from the strain energy density factor. Analytical solution of the stress singularity exponent depends only on the value of the V-notch opening angle. In the case of out of plane bending it is also influenced by free surface. Therefore it has to be estimated numerically from stress distribution around the V-notch tip in studies case. The critical stress values are estimated using finite element method and these data are compared with experiments taken from literature.
