Original Abstract

Mechanically unstable environments nearby large civil engineering structures represent a critical problem that may cause disasters of large extents. This contribution deals with unstable rock ground situated beneath civil engineering structures that suffer from the risk of mechanical failure. The instability is caused by rock discontinuities whose strength is determined by the shear strength of rock joints. Computer evaluation of surface roughness of rock joints, as an important factor influencing shear strength, is the subject of this contribution.

Keywords

Civil structures in unstable environment; rock discontinuities; joint roughness coefficients; assessment of roughness coefficients; computerized assessment.
