Original Abstract

The necessity of expenditure on R&D in the business sector is a topical trend in the current economic situation. The level of investment is assessed as a percentage of GDP (R&D expenditure (% of GDP)). In its Europe 2020 Strategy, the EU obliged its member states to achieve a level of at least 3 %, divided as follows: 2 % of expenditure on R&D is to originate from the business sector, 1 % from the state sector. This paper focuses on a comparison of the development of expenditure on R&D in the business sector in the V4 countries with the EU27 average. The author has monitored the expenditure of SMEs, the number of SMEs and the level of expenditure in the business sector per capita. The author of the paper has employed an analysis and synthesis method, statistical methods – analysis of time periods. Conversion to per capita figures has been used for the purpose of comparison of individual values. The input data was secondary data obtained and verified from statistical authorities and governmental information sources in the individual states. The results published in this paper indicate that, although the number of SMEs in the countries of the V4 does not differ significantly from the EU27 average, only the Czech Republic is able to compete in the area of expenditure in the business sector. Even the Czech Republic, however, will have to modify its support for investment in R&D in the future in order to fulfil the criteria set out in the Europe 2020 Strategy. This paper may be a starting point for further research in the area of support for R&D in the business sector.
