Original Abstract

Cement kilns are multidimensional, difficult to measure and ill known systems. Therefore non-traditional common sense reasoning is chosen as a suitable formal tool for analysis. Qualitative models represent a transparent and simple methodology of formalizing this type of reasoning. A qualitative model is based on three values only, namely positive, zero and negative. A shallow knowledge item is represented by qualitative derivatives (increasing, constant, decreasing) of some pairs of variables. Complete lists of all possible qualitative scenarios i.e. qualitative model's solutions are generated. There are 61 scenarios. The final result represents a list of all possible tran-sitions among the scenarios. The total number of all possible transitions is 676. The list of transitions represents the complete description of any unsteady state behavior of a cement kiln. No a priory knowledge of the qualitative theory is required.
