For a large experiment in the field of civil engineering involving more than 50 sensors, a data logging system was developed. The system consists of analog frontend PCBs that convert the signals of the sensors into data packets which are then sent to the host system on which the universal datalogging software runs. The program receives the data packets, performs error checks, scales the sensor data using scaling factors preset in a configuration file and then stores the processed sensor data together with a timestamp. At the same time, the system clock is regularly synchronized with timeservers via NTP over the internet and the gathered data is made accessible via FTP and HTTP servers.
