On the project

Following the obtained results from a previous IGA project (CEITEC VUT/FEKT-J-23-8307), graphite-based field emission cathodes will be tested as scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) probes. The best performance was obtained when graphite microlayer was applied on a substrate of glass microtips. These probes were able to operate at 1 and 10^-4 Pa and to scan the topography of a ~20 µm2 gold layer. The glass-graphite probes were higher in performance than tungsten polycrystalline probes, which requires in-situ cleaning before STM measurements.
