BUT is an associate investigator of EERA_CZ project

Brno University of Technology has been admitted to the joint program Energy Storage under the European Energy Research Alliance (EERA). Membership admission has been approved at the meeting of the Steering Committee in Brussels on April 12, 2016, based on the presentation of the current research activities at BUT in the field of energy storage. Among the participating teams are the research groups from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. Involvement in the organization and specifically the EERA Joint Energy Storage project were supported by EERA_CZ, which aims to bring the ERA scientific environment to the Czech scientific institutions.

About the EERA_CZ project

VUT is an associate investigator of the EERA_CZ project, which is enabling participation of the Czech research organizations in European Energy Research Alliance (EERA) and also their possible participation in consortia of the Horizon 2020 program, which are co-created also in the alliance. By the participation in the joint programs of EERA, the members can influence priorities of the energy research in the energy field in Europe and also have an impact on the calls of the Horizon 2020 and Euroatom programs.

What is the EERA?

The European Energy Research Alliance (EERA) is a body founded in 2008 by ten principal European organizations concerned with research in the field of energy production. The founding bodies were CEA, CIEMAT, CRES, ECN, ENEA, Helmholz Association, LNEG, Riso – DTU, UK-ERC and VTT. The main aim of the EERA is to help fast-track development of technology in the field of energy production, through the formulation of joint research programs, and to support activities delimited in the Strategic Plan for Energy Technologies (SET-Plan). EERA has as the primary target strengthening and optimization of research and development in the EU as a result sharing joint technology. It further concentrates on the direct application of knowledge gained from the basic research in the industrial sphere. In short, there is a manifested desire to specifically co-ordinate public funding in R&D in energy production in the EU (which will avoid duplication of the efforts and will additionally protect unfunded but strategic areas).

The activities of the EERA are defined by these research fields, approved for funding:

  • Economic, ENVIRONMENTAL and social impacts (JP E3S)
  • Energy efficiency in industrial processes
  • Energy storage

  • Ocean enerGy
  • Photovoltaic solar energy
  • Shale gas
  • Smart cities
  • Smart grids
  • Wind energy

Subsequently, specific research programs were formulated. Each research program is administered by an institute and by a coordinator, who manages the activities of the program. The majority of the programs are further connected with sub-programs.

The activities of individual institutions within the framework of EERA are financed from the EU budget and member states (on the basis of existing research projects).

In the near future it is expected that the EERA will play an important role in the management of European research funding.
