Majáles 2025: the Maypole on Liberty Square is decorated with red ribbons of BUT
The largest student festival, where it is decided which universities will reign over Brno in the coming year, is traditionally preceded by the raising of the maypole. Students from five Brno's universities jointly erected it on Tuesday, April 1, at náměstí Svobody, officially kicking off a month of celebrations that will culminate in Brno Majáles in May. The decorated maypole is adorned with red ribbons in the colors of BUT.
Before the maypole was raised, it was prepared at Mendel University. Students first stripped the bark and then decorated it with ribbons in the colors of Brno’s universities. From the campus of Mendel University, a colorful student procession, led by the candidates for king, carried the maypole on their shoulders all the way to náměstí Svobody.
In the city center, the festivities continued with the decoration of a wreath, to which the queens attached handmade ornaments. Representing Brno University of Technology on the maypole is a red heart made of playing cards, adorned with ribbons and a string of lights. The BUT queen candidate wanted to make it clear that the decoration belongs to BUT while also reflecting this year's theme: Technology – the ace up the sleeve. A ribbon symbolizing support for Brno’s students was also added to the wreath by representatives of the City of Brno and the South Moravian Region.
The festive afternoon concluded with the ceremonial raising of the maypole, symbolizing the month of spring student celebrations. With great pride, the kings, assisted by their royal guards, successfully erected the adorned tree. After completing this ritual, the queens and the entire royal entourage joined in the celebrations.
Brno Majáles has long been associated with student life, and the Brno University of Technology is proud to be a part of it. Throughout the next month, BUT’s selected candidates for Majáles King and Queen will represent the university at various events — Karolína Cíchová from the Faculty of Business and Management and Václav Bařinka from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication.
You can already vote for them on the Brno Majáles website: Vote for the Queen / Vote for the King.
