BUT confirms its strong position in the THE World University Rankings by Subject

The British company Times Higher Education (THE) has published the latest subject ranking, THE World University Rankings by Subject 2025. Brno University of Technology (BUT) ranked in three out of eleven possible subjects, confirming its leading position in the Czech Republic. In the field of Engineering, it maintained its position as the best Czech university and strengthened its standing in Computer Science.

As in the previous five years, BUT ranked in the fields of Business and Economics, Computer Science, and Engineering. In all these fields, its scores improved compared to last year.

In the category of Business and Economics, BUT consistently ranks among the top three Czech universities, behind Charles University and Tomas Bata University in Zlín, and globally it ranks in the 501st–600th position. This year, a total of 990 institutions (compared to 909 last year) from 85 countries participated in this category. The top three positions are held by MIT, Oxford, and Stanford.

BUT achieved success in Computer Science, climbing to the second position among Czech universities. It surpassed the Czech Technical University in Prague (CTU) and now ranks just behind Charles University. Globally, BUT is in the 501st–600th position in this subject ranking, which this year included 1,122 institutions (compared to 1,027 last year) from 83 countries. The top three positions are occupied by Oxford, Cambridge, and MIT.

In the category of Engineering, BUT retained its position as the top Czech university, ahead of CTU and the University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague. Globally, it ranked in the 801st–1,000th position. According to this ranking, BUT is the highest-rated Czech university in all related engineering subfields – chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical & electronic engineering, general engineering, and mechanical & aerospace engineering. The engineering ranking includes a total of 1,488 institutions (compared to 1,306 last year) from 97 countries. The top three positions are held by Harvard, Stanford, and MIT.

The subject ranking THE World University Rankings by Subject has been published by the British magazine Times Higher Education since 2011. It compares the results of higher education institutions in eleven distinct subject groups, ranging from humanities to engineering and medicine. The methodology includes key indicators such as academic reputation, research citation impact, student-to-staff ratio, and industry income. This ranking serves as an important measure of quality and excellence in specific subjects.

Together with the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) and the QS World University Rankings by Subject, THE World University Rankings by Subject is one of the three most closely watched subject rankings in the world.
