Considering the continuing depletion of fossil fuel reserves and growth of consumption, it is becoming more important to search for new energy sources. Experience shows sewage sludge as a suitable alternative energy source. In this contribution, several selected options for sludge-to-energy exploitation in sludge treatment sections of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) are assessed. Among key factors influencing choice of sludge treatment technology belongs namely its heating value. A crucial parameter in evaluation of mass and energy fluxes is the level of attainable de-watering. The following three options are presented and assessed in this work: - 1st option - anaerobic digestion of mixed raw sludge with subsequent heat and power cogeneration from obtained biogas, - 2nd option - combustion of mixed raw sludge with utilization of energy contained in flue gases, - 3rd option - combustion of digested sludge combined with utilisation of energy contained in biogas and flue gases.
