Possibility of clean energy conversion and independence on foreign energy sources are main reasons for contemporary drive to use of hydrogen. This will bring need for large use of hydrogen safety sensors because hydrogen gas is not only highly explosive but also invisible and non odorant. Very convenient material for hydrogen sensors are noble metals and especially palladium which in interaction with hydrogen change its conductivity, optical properties and the work function. Palladium sensors based on change of the work function were investigated. Basic principles and properties of palladium based hydrogen sensors are described and main conclusions from experiments with measurement of surface potential and palladium gate FET structure are given.
