The arc suppression coil controller is an important component necessary for the operation of resonant grounded networks. Since the controller cannot be operated without feedback from the environment it controls, it is not possible to test it with conventional offline secondary tests. This requires the use of a real-time simulator and hardware-in-the-loop tests where the controller is integrated into the simulation. This paper presents the integration of the arc suppression coil controller function of ABB's REX 640 multifunction terminal into a real-time simulation using IEC 61850 GOOSE and Sampled Values communication. The paper describes a developed real-time simulation that simulates the behavior of a medium voltage distribution network and the actual arc suppression coil. The last part of the paper presents the tests that were performed using hardware-in-the-loop simulation.
