The accumulation of by-products from food industry is a worldwide problem. Lignocellulosic materials belong to the group of these by-products. There are various applications for lignocellulosic materials, for example production of biofuels, creation of various types of chemicals or production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs). PHAs represent biocompatible and biodegradable polymers produced as intracellular granules by a range of prokaryotic microorganisms. We analysed the composition of wheat bran and brewers' grains, which are by-products from a food industry, by using HPLC-RI. We cultivated 6 selected bacterial strains on hydrolysates and determined the PHA content using gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector. The best producer of PHA was bacterial strain Halomonas, which produced PHA up to 68% of the cell's dry mass.
