This article focuses on justification of the meaning of the process of internationalisation of small and middle sized companies in the Czech Republic. The briefly outlined contemporary state of recognition points at generally growing role of SMEs in the world economics. The environment in which Czech companies are found is distinctive by certain specifics that are mostly the result of the short history of SMEs in the Czech Republic. At the beginning of the economic transformation the SMEs sector did not exist at all and the number of foreign companies in the economics of the Czech Republic was minor. Since 1989 significant changes in this sector have taken place. SMEs are considered to be the main driving power of the economic growth and structural changes. The research project focuses mainly on three aspects that influence the position of Czech SMEs in the process of internationalisation and their competitiveness to a great extend. The article briefly outlines the starting points from on which we base our research and it focuses on pre-research carried out in 2002. In order to achieve the complexity of the process of internationalisation of SMEs it is necessary to take into consideration the longitudinal aspect, though. We realize that more complex results are still a matter of time. Despite this we hope that even partial outputs of the pre-research can bring creative impulse for a scientific discussion.
