The design parameters of dams (i.e. the spillway design flood) have been recently revaluated in the Czech Republic. It is a reaction to the worldwide trend as well as to extreme flood events occurred in the last ten years. The main aim is enhancement of the safety of dams during floods. Safety management of a 10 000-year flood is required according to the new legislature (Decree No. 490/2002 Coll., as later amended). The Bystřička dam is one of the oldest dams in the Czech Republic. It is equipped with three bottom outlets and an emergency spillway with a stepped chute. The present capacity of the spillway is approx. 101.0 m3.s 1. However, a safety passing of 310.5 m3.s-1 is required now. A large reconstruction of the overflow including the first three steps of the stepped chute was proposed by the designer (Pöyry Environment, a.s.). All upgrades had to be assessed on a physical model. This paper summarizes the results of hydraulic research of the Bystřička dam emergency spillway. Special attention is given to the flow over the stepped part of the spillway.
