Loss factor measurements of various materials are of great importance for engineering practice. The loss factor, , characterizes the internal vibration damping in the material under investigation. If a harmonic-varying force is used for the measurement, a phase shift between the induced stress and the resulting deformation will arise, being due to the damping force (internal and external friction). The loss factor influences the width of the resonance curve. The frequency shift from the resonance frequency at which the amplitude drops to 0.707 times the maximum (resonance) value (i.e., to Um/ 2) can be used to determine d. For a given resonance frequency, the shape of the resonance curve can be recorded. The loss factor d can be determined from the resonance curve bandwidth fn.
