The aim of the project is classification of the types of terrain surface above the route of gas line and the final statistical evaluation. These data will be used to estimate the costs to be spent on building new gas networks below the given surface. The solution of the project was created in a GIS environment. The basis of solution is image classification of orthophoto with filtering using ZABAGED layers of communications. Orthophoto is with resolution of 25 cm/pixel. The entire process is handled by a variety of ArcGIS functional tools and it forms an analytical whole. The task is specific for its territorial extent, large volumes of data in the order hundreds of GB and relatively good quality outputs in the order of several units of meter. The size of the processed area for more than 62,000 kilometers of gas lines is in the extent almost of the whole Czech Republic. The effort was to automatize the whole process, so 7 scripts in Python language were produced, which were used in the individual phases of the project. The main outputs are graphics layers in SHP format with classified route of the gas line and a statistical table in XLS format for different territorial units with sums of lengths of gas according to individual classified categories.
