What is CIMER?

The CIMER (Cyanobacteria In Microgravity Environment Research) bio-mission aims to explore the potential benefits of using desiccant hibernation to grow biologicals in space. The project is a joint effort of the YSpace team from the Brno University of Technology (BUT) and Mendel University (MENDELU) in the Czech Republic. This mission will be the first student bioCubeSat from the Czech Republic, which represents an important milestone in efforts to strengthen this industry in our country.

What is the main goal?

The main goal of the CIMER mission is to test the prototype Micro Biological Container (MIBICO) for long-term storage of microalgae and bacteria colonies on board satellites. The successful cultivation of microbiological organisms is key to their ability to produce oxygen through photosynthesis and survive in extreme space conditions. This ability is crucial to the ability of humans to expand to other cosmic bodies.

What will MIBICO look like?

MIBICO will contain four hermetically sealed micro-containers with samples of organic material. It will be tested for long-term storage and reactivation of desiccated biomass. The organisms considered for this experiment are cyanobacteria and chlamydomonads from the class of green algae. The awakening process involves injecting nutrient solutions and activating life support systems, followed by measuring metabolic and life processes such as oxygen production. 

Mission objective?

The CIMER mission represents an important step in the development of space research in the Czech Republic. This mission aims to contribute to our understanding of biocultivation processes and allow us to test technologies that will be used in future space exploration. By involving students and young professionals from BUT and MENDELU, this mission actively develops mutual cooperation between institutions and at the same time enables them to gain valuable practical experience in the field of space environment research.
