Course detail

Visual Literacy

FaVU-1VIG-LAcad. year: 2015/2016

The course is taught by Mgr. Václav Hájek, Ph.D in 2009/10
The course focuses on several interpretation approaches to image and perception in their common forms in the past and in their crystalization to certain theoretical disciplines in modern ages. Visuality is dealt with in two directions in European context. According to the first direction, meaning is searched in visual representation. The image is then understaood as illustration or demonstration of something general (a surrogate of a word or notion). Visual entity can then have didactic function, can act as propaganda or the theatre of sensuality which is to bring the perceiver to a certain goal. The second direction observes the form of the visual phenomenon itself. It deals with its form, structure, and conposition. In this case, the medium as an agent of visuality is emphasized.
