Recommendation for Education

In the field of education at the BUT, it is necessary to apply the basic principles for the use of generative AI tools issued by the university.

Limits of use

Copying the output of generative AI tools (e.g. copying texts generated using ChatGPT) and submitting them as the result of student work is not allowed. Such behaviour will be considered similar to contract-cheating.

It is permissible to use the assistive role of generative AI tools, in particular to find information that the student then independently assesses and uses as appropriate.

Limits of use set by the dean or lecturer

The dean (or the director of the higher education institute) and, for a particular course or student work, the instructor may set additional limits on the use of generative AI tools.

Student work

Student work must indicate whether the student has used generative AI tools, to what extent and for what purpose.

Final theses

The inclusion of outputs produced by generative AI tools in the final thesis does not relieve the author of responsibility for the work submitted and its quality. The possible uses of AI tools in the thesis are determined by the supervisor, and these limits may already be part of the thesis assignment.

The student's declaration that he/she has prepared the thesis independently also applies if he/she has not used generative AI tools.

The thesis must state whether the student has used generative AI tools, to what extent and for what purpose.

Teacher-generated materials and copyright

Teachers are entitled to use generative AI tools to prepare materials for teaching, but they must indicate which tools were used and to what extent.

In addition, the teacher must verify the (contractual) conditions for the use of the specific generative AI tool, which are always formulated by the provider of the tool. These conditions may also stipulate the authorship of the outputs of the tool, thus ensuring that the teacher does not infringe the copyright of the provider.

Caution when inserting data

When embedding data in generative AI tools, it is important to make sure that the student or teacher has permission to use the data they are sharing. Special care should be taken when uploading personal and other sensitive data.
