The Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is simply defined as the computer system-to-computer system exchange of business documents in a structured, pre-defined standard format. The main purpose of the EDI is to avoid and prevent additional human intervention of reading and processing information between trading partners by establishing a standard data transmission protocol. Electronic data interchange can be used to transmit documents electronically and in our case for data interchange consumption and supply of electricity. EDI can also be used to transmit financial information and payment in electronic forms, which is usually referred as electronic funds transfer. Because of these, the functions of the EDI become more and more significant nowadays especially with the growth of electronic commerce over the World. Therefore, It is important for us to understand how the EDI works. This paper describes the basic problem of EDI and what the future trends and developments of the EDI will be.
