The paper presents numerical studies of sources of randomness as they occur in laboratory tensile tests of multi filament yarns of glass textile reinforcement for concrete. The main phenomenon under study is the length effect on the yarn tensile strength. The newly formulated deterministic micromechanical model constitutes the stepping stone for stochastic simulation of strength and the whole response to tensile load. We study sources of randomness both across the yarn and along the filaments. The analyses are compared to theoretical and laboratory results. Emphasis is given to simulation of spatial variability of local strength by random fields and the existence of statistical length scales.
