Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are bacterial polyesters which are considered as biodegradable and environmentally-friendly alternative to petrochemical plastics. Biotechnological production of PHAs is complicated by the lack of fast and reliable analytical tool enabling rapid and sensitive determination of PHAs in bacterial cells during the biotechnological process. The most commonly employed method for quantitative analysis of PHAs is gas chromatography, nevertheless, labor intensity and time demands of this methods prevents its application for routine analysis of PHAs during biotechnological process. The aim of this work was to compare two analytical methods which could be used for determination of intracellular content in time-frame of 20 minutes - Flow cytometry and Raman spectroscopy.
