In industrial applications, most of lubricated rolling-sliding contacts are operate under time dependent transient conditions and all of them are affected by vibrations. The prediction of the film thickness in rolling contacts under steady-state conditions is nowadays a matter of routine. Nevertheless, a film thickness analytical prediction is not established for conditions including vibration motions such as those found in actual machines. For this purpose both numerical and experimental data are needed. In the current paper a film thickness distribution governed by lateral vibrations is investigated experimentally. The EHL contact was formed between a transparent flat disc and a steel ball. The ball was subjected to rolling-sliding motion simultaneously with sliding harmonic motion in a direction perpendicular to the rolling direction. The point contact was observed by high-speed camera and a colorimetric interferometry method was used to evaluate the film thickness. Results of this study indicate the effects of different stroke ratios and frequencies of sideslip vibrations on the lubricant film thickness distribution within the contact.
