The presence of xenobiotics in all types of water environment is a current Word-wide emerging problem. Major threats are represented by a wide use of xenobiotics. Pharmaceuticals are used in human and veterinary medicine every day and they are significantly represented in wastewater. Because of that waste water is considered as a primary source of the environmental contamination. Requirements for the quality of discharged wastewater are getting stricter. Conventional purifying methods on wastewater treatment plants are insufficient for elimination of certain xenobiotics. Especially for xenobiotics which are difficult, slowly or impossible to eliminate by conventional (mechanical -biological) methods. Due to these facts we deal with the possilibity of xenobiotics removal by advanced oxidation processes (AOP). It is promising technology with high efficiency of pharmaceuticals removal. Advanced oxidation processes are based on the generation of highly reactive free hydroxyl radicals. They are able to oxidize difficult oxidizable pollution and therefore to reduce environmental contamination. We have chosen three groups of pharmaceuticals. The first group contains Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen, diclofenac, naproxen, ketoprofen) which are the most consumed pharmaceuticals in the Czech Republic. The second group are macrolide antibiotics (azithromycin, clarithromycin, erythromycin, roxithromycin) and the third are sulphonamide antibiotics (sulfamethoxazole, sulfathiazol, sulfamethazin). The experiments were performed on flow-through AOPs pilot unit which works with ozone, hydrogen peroxide, UV radiation and their combinations. The solid-phase extraction technique (SPE) was used for extraction, preconcentration and purification of target compounds. The high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with DAD and mass spectrometry detection (HPLC-DAD-MS) was used for final analysis, identification and quantification.
