Autoři se zamýšlejí nad významem náměstí v dnešních městech, nad nároky, které na ně současná společnost klade. Na příkladu města Brna hledají a zároveň ověřují způsob, jak co nejobjektivněji a přitom jednoduše vyhodnotit kvality konkrétních náměstí. Nastiňují, porovnávají a interpretují tři různé metody: 1. multikriteriální hodnocení (pohled architekta-urbanisty), 2. hodnocení skutečných aktivit (pohled sociologa) a 3. dotazníkové šetření (pohled uživatele náměstí). Lze předpokládat, že veřejně prezentované výsledky hodnocení povedou k větší aktivitě místních obyvatel a pomůžou obecním úřadům, hledajícím možnost zlepšení stávající situace, v rozhodování. Publikace je prvním krokem na cestě k zamýšlené podrobné encyklopedii všech brněnských veřejných prostranství, která se nazývají náměstími nebo je za náměstí jejich obyvatelé považují. Popsaná metoda hodnocení je využitelná pro posouzení kvality náměstí také v jiných městech.

The authors consider the role that public squares play in contemporary towns and cities and evaluate the demands placed by society on these public realms. They seek to postulate and prove a method of evaluation of the quality of specific public squares in the city of Brno. They have chosen to do this using three methods which are outlined and compared in this publication. The first method is one of multi-objective evaluation, this is the view of the Architect and Urbanist. The second is an evaluation of real time activities, this will be the view of sociologist and the third method involves the use of a questionnaire to get the actual views of the users. The authors suggest that by repeating this evaluation over time it would be possible to compare the results which would provide a valuable record of the development of these squares in Brno. The assumption is that if the results were displayed publicly there would be greater interest and activity shows by local residents which would enable local authorities to find solutions to enhance the user experience of the squares. It is itendend that this publication will be the first step in developing a detailed record of all the public squares and indeed all spaces treated by the locals as public squares in Brno. It is intended that the evaluation methods autlined in this publication would be widely applicable to other towns and cities.
