Candidates applying to study in the Civil Engineering bachelor’s study programme must demonstrate knowledge and understanding within the scope specified by the appropriate directive of the Dean of FCE BUT, which requires them to have successfully completed their secondary education with a “Maturita“ final secondary school exam. Then, either the grade point average from the candidate’s secondary school allows acceptance without an entrance exam, or an entrance exam is sat featuring mathematics and physics papers based on the current syllabus taught at grammar schools.

The content of the Civil Engineering bachelor’s study programme with a standard duration of 4 years is designed to meet the requirements of the Higher Education Act (Act No. 111/1998 Coll.) and Act No. 360/1992 on the Professional Practice of Certified Architects and on the Professional Practice of Chartered Engineers and Technicians Engaged in Construction. It has been created in accordance with the National Programme for the Development of Education in the Czech Republic, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic, and with standards formulated within European documents currently in force. The aim of the Civil Engineering bachelor’s study programme is that graduates from that programme: can find full employment of their skills in the field they have studied; are able to creatively apply the knowledge obtained during the programme; can compete with graduates from similar study programmes from educational institutions not only in the Czech Republic but also within the countries of the EU; can, after the specified length of work experience, become certified according to Act No. 360/1992 as a certified engineer; command the necessary language skills; can study in consecutive master’s study programmes at all civil engineering faculties in the Czech Republic and abroad; and have gained the necessary theoretical, specialised and practical knowledge and skills in the area of civil engineering. The Civil Engineering bachelor’s study programme comprises five fields of study that have traditionally been taught at the Faculty of Civil Engineering at BUT for many years. They are: Building Constructions, Structures and Traffic Constructions, Building Material Engineering, Water Management and Water Structures, Civil Engineering Management. The Civil Engineering study programme is concluded by a Final State Examination, which is composed of two parts: the defence of the student’s bachelor’s thesis and a specialised discussion on the subjects of the study programme. After successfully passing the Final State Examination bachelor’s degree graduates are entitled to use the title "bakalář" (abbreviated to Bc.) before their names. The Civil Engineering bachelor’s study programme also enables student mobility, providing the opportunity for students to study for their degree in similar professional bachelor’s study programmes at civil engineering faculties in the Czech Republic and universities within the states of the EU.
Key learning outcomes:
During the course of their four years of study, graduates from the Civil Engineering bachelor’s study programme gain knowledge, skills and understanding from theoretical and specialised disciplines targeted at individual fields of study. They are capable of applying the knowledge gained in the individual subjects in dealing with the issues specific to the given subject areas.
They are able to: prepare, or participate in the preparation of construction project documentation, or the preparation of land use planning materials and relevant parts of land use planning documentation; perform static and dynamic calculations for structures; carry out technical construction and engineering surveys; perform testing and diagnostic analysis on structures; publish expert opinions; prepare documentation and reports for individual evaluations of the influence of a structure on the environment; manage the realization of a structure; carry out geodetic surveying for projects and demarcation work; act as construction inspector in the capacity of the author of project documentation or as a site manager during the realization of a structure; act as the authorised representative of a developer or designer during proceedings connected with land use planning, construction permission and building acceptance; act as a specialist employed in a department dealing with the building code or land use planning in organs of state administration, etc.

Access to further studies:
Graduates may continue their education through a consecutive master’s study programme, where they may gain the title Ing. With regard to graduates’ knowledge of foreign languages in their specialised area they can study for a master’s degree either in the Czech Republic or abroad.
