Learning outcomes of the course unit:
The student gains the knowledge ot properties, manufacture and use of building materials.
This concerns primarily the basic modifications of concrete, building ceramic, binders and mortars, metals, building glass, wood, thermal insulation, sound insulation and waterproofing materials, polymers, adhesives, textile. The student verifies his or her knowledge in laboratory practice and, by experiments, learns to know the properties of materials.
In the subject's part dedicated to geology, the student gains the knowledge of using stone as bulding material for a work of architecture, learns to know stone's properties, and the determination of conditions of engineering geology survey, which is an indispensable part of
foundation engineering.
Mode of delivery:
90 % face-to-face, 10 % distance learning
Students go through this subject in their first semester of their stay on the faculty, therefore there is assumed no previous knowledge to manage the subject matter.

Course contents (annotation):
The subject is divided into two parts. The first one covers building materials, the second offers knowledge of geology. The subject's aim is to acquaint the students with the fundamental physical and utility properties of materials, and with the technologies of their production and application. The study covers the technology of concrete, production of building ceramics, the knowledge of wood, glass, binders, mortars, metals, insulation materials, technologies of surface treatment, sealants, adhesives and paints. The classes are followed by tutorials in laboratories. The part devoted to geology covers the fundamentals of petrography, the knowledge of the external and internal geological forces, geological action of water , and the foundation of buildings.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods:
Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.
Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes:
Condition for gaining the credit is 100% presence on trainings – in laboratories. Only the student who successfully finished the trainings and is given the credit is allowed for the exam.
The exam is written in the form of test that is assembled from questions related to presented subject matter. Final classification is created from training evaluation and test result.

The subject's aim is to acquaint the students with the fundamental physical and utility properties of materials, and with the technologies of their production and application.
Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences:
The training in laboratories is controlled. Based on acquired results the students process logs that are classified. Presence on lectures is not mandatory, no checks are made.
