Study aims

The follow-up master's degree program in Cybernetics, Automation and Measurement aims to provide graduates of the program with a deeper theoretical basis for the design, construction and application of measuring, control and automation systems. In addition to theoretical knowledge, emphasis is also placed on the ability to apply theoretical knowledge in practice.
During the study, the student can acquire deeper knowledge and skills through the study of selected compulsory elective subjects, eg in the field of measurement, automatic control, robotics, industrial control and communication systems, knowledge of machine learning principles or image processing, according to their choice.
Emphasis is also placed on the language preparation of students, especially on professional English and the ability of graduates to present and discuss professional topics in English.
The aim of the study is to prepare graduates who will apply in research, development, production, design, trade and services - wherever a wide range of modern methods and means of automation, applied informatics, machine learning and digital technology are applied.
Thanks to a systemic and comprehensive view of management issues, which is typical for graduates of "cybernetics", our graduates, after gaining practical experience, successfully apply in key management and managerial positions and in functions in which they apply a systems view, knowledge of systems analysis and optimal management.

Graduate profile

The study program Cybernetics, Automation and Measurement profiles the graduate for independent creative work and thinking based on a systemic view of technical and non-technical systems and the world as a whole. The graduate of the program will be able to use the acquired professional knowledge, skills and general and professional competencies to independently define and creatively solve a theoretical and practical problem.

Ability to explain the principles, advantages and disadvantages of automation systems according to ISA S88 and ISA95, the ability to discuss the issue of virtual commissioning of production systems.
Professional qualifications:
Ability to solve engineering tasks using the acquired knowledge and skills, design, discuss and make decisions aimed at fulfilling the assigned tasks in a specified time.
Ability to present one's own professional opinions in Czech and English.
Using already known theoretical knowledge, search for and expand their professional knowledge and apply this to the given problem.

The breadth and depth of knowledge of all graduates is verified by examinations in the compulsory subjects of the profiling basis, as well as by the final examination in the state examination.
Demonstrate skills and general competences related to the application of knowledge in practice during the study in the framework of compulsory laboratory exercises, individual or team projects. Knowledge, skills and ability to produce quality engineering works and the ability to present the achieved results are demonstrated mainly by the independent elaboration and defense of the diploma thesis.
Graduates are prepared to find employment in technical practice, in creative work, research and development, in production, in management and managerial positions in technical or commercial companies. Due to the breadth of professional knowledge that modern technologies and trends require for their mastery, graduates focus on one or more professional areas in the form of compulsory elective subjects according to their interest during their studies.

Profession characteristics

Graduates are mainly employed in:
- in the field of professional activity in production, design and trade organizations,
- in development and design teams,
- in academia and other institutions involved in science, research, development and innovation,
- in all areas of society where cybernetic systems or cybernetic principles are applied.
Graduates find employment mainly in the analysis, design, creation and management of measuring and control systems, in the programming, integration, support, maintenance and sale of these systems.

Study plan creation

The rules and conditions for creating study plans are given by BUT's internal regulations "BUT Study and Examination Regulations," BUT Study Programs Regulations "and the relevant BUT internal standards.
Study subjects are evaluated by credits according to ECTS. The credit expresses the approximate weekly hourly workload of the student during the study of the subject. Contact teaching is usually organized in two-hour or three-hour blocks. The lesson lasts 60 minutes, the last 10 minutes of each lesson block are scheduled as a break.
Credits for a given subject will be obtained by the student only after its prescribed completion, ie after granting credit, graded credit, or taking an exam under the conditions given by the Study and Examination Regulations of BUT, internal standard Rules for the organization of studies at FEEC and composition and content individually determined in each subject.

The number of courses included in the individual semesters of the MPC-KAM study plan corresponds to the study load given by the credit evaluation of these courses. In the two-year follow-up master's study MPC-KAM, the student must obtain at least 120 credits in the specified credit structure:

- 81 credits in compulsory subjects, the content of which defines the guaranteed profile of the graduate, which is verified by a state exam at the end of the study,
- a minimum of 29 credits in compulsory elective courses (PVB),
- at least 4 credits from English
- at least 6 credits in elective courses.
Compulsory subjects are usually completed by the student in semesters and grades as specified in the study plans. If a student does not successfully complete a compulsory subject in the prescribed manner, he / she must re-enroll it immediately in the following year of his / her studies.
The student is obliged to successfully complete two English language courses during the study, for technical and organizational reasons these two courses are included as compulsory elective courses.
In the first semester of study, two basic theoretical subjects in the field of mathematics are included. The subject of the theoretical basis of the Selected Part of Mathematics (MPC-VPM) for Engineers is followed in the second semester by a group of compulsory elective courses (PVB), which contains two subjects of engineering physics. Both of these subjects are based on the mathematical apparatus from MPC-VPM. The subjects of the profiling basis, which expand and deepen the professional knowledge and skills acquired in the bachelor's study, are concentrated mainly in the first two semesters of study. The third semester of the study includes the last professional subject of the profiling basis (Process Automation) and also the compulsory subject Presentation Skills, which prepares students theoretically and practically for the presentation of professional knowledge in English. Students choose the topic of the diploma thesis at the beginning of the second year of study, work out the chosen topic during the third semester of study in the form of a semester work, where they usually analyze assignments, get acquainted with literature and suggest possible solutions. In the fourth semester of study, the dominant part of the study load is the realization of the diploma thesis. The scope and content of the subjects profiling the basis were determined so as to deepen the knowledge and skills acquired during the bachelor's study, deepen the theoretical understanding of the basic principles and provide a basis for professional compulsory elective subjects.

Compulsory elective courses (PVB) are professional subjects whose task is to expand and deepen students' professional knowledge. Compulsory elective courses for a given academic year are chosen by the student from the current offer of the study plan while respecting the rules for their selection specified in the FEEC BUT Information System. When choosing PV courses, the student respects the recommended prerequisites or co-requisites, if they are specified for the course in its study documentation. Recommendations for the choice of these subjects for the study of individual specializations are given in Annex 1 of the application.

Elective courses expand students' general knowledge. The student chooses the courses from the whole faculty offer (FEEC institutes) or from the offer of other faculties of BUT (so-called free courses) and can complete them in any year or semester of study. Optional subjects include the subject Physical Education.

Students choose optional subjects according to their professional interest using recommendations for individual specializations, taking into account the topic of their semester and diploma thesis and with regard to the recommendation to achieve an annual study load of at least 60 credits.
Students who start their studies in 2020/21 and later must, in order to successfully complete their studies, complete a compulsory or optional professional subject in English according to the study plan, see the BUT Guidelines "For the Teaching of Foreign Languages".

Availability for the disabled

All lecture rooms at the FEEC BUT allow disabled access; students, however, must meet the medical standards to acquire the necessary electrotechnical qualifications. In laboratory classes and practicals, students are required to independently operate measuring instruments and related equipment without endangering human health or damaging property.
