Profile

The PhD study of study branch "Physical and Building Materials Engineering" is focused to a complex scientific training, to methods of individual scientific work and to knowledge development in the field of Building Materials Theory. The fundamental disciplines of the branch are Physics of Materials, Physical Chemistry of Silicates, Theory of Composite Materials, Microstructure of Building Materials, Durability and Rehabilitation of Materials and Structures, further Methods of Measurement and Diagnostics, Modeling of Physical Processes and Building Physics Tasks. From building technical applications especially the Concrete and Building Structures Rehabilitation, Moisture Rehabilitation, Heat-Technical Problems, Reclaiming of Steel and of Wooden Structures. The scientific training in this field is based basic theoretical disciplines of natural sciences and of theoretical scientific disciplines of relevant professional orientation. The graduate of PhD study is trained for asserting himself in development and research activities which enable creative solution of problems, of new progressive building materials development and their use in building structures. The basic character of this PhD education is the close connection both with scientific, research and development activities on the training workplace and in proper technological practice. The continuous active scientific activity is the qualification for possible engagement of graduates as members of the academic staffs at universities.

  1. Analysis of glue penetration into the wood submicrostructure

    The durability of adhesives for wood elements is determined by the stability of the glued joint against the moisture cyclic exposure. Durability is determined by penetration of adhesive into the cell wall. The selected dissertation theme focuses on the experimental application of methods (NMR spectroscopy, SAXS, tomography etc.) for easy detection of different types of adhesives in the structure of the cell wall.

  2. Application of acoustic methods to assessing the the status parameter lightweight polymer-cementitious repair mortars exposed to high temperatures

    The aim is to use acoustic methods: Impact-Echo, acoustic emission and nonlinear ultrasonic spectroscopy for rapid non-destructive testing status lightweight polymer-cementitious repair mortars exposed to high temperatures. Will be investigated repair mortars polymer cement with modified. The aim of the modification of the composition will achieve the parameters characteristic of fire-resistant repair mortars. They will be used polymeric fibers polyolefin.

  3. Application of pulse-echo method to assessing the condition of degraded building materials

    The objective of the study consists in the application of the non-destructive acoustic method to a fast testing of the condition of degraded building materials. The results of the study will be compared with those obtained by classical methods: compressive and tensile strengths (simple tension, transversal tension, flexural tensile strength), static and dynamic modulus of elasticity.

  4. Behaviour of building materials in an AC electric field

    The main objective is to make a detailed comparison of the electrical parameters of thermally loaded concrete samples with changes in the structure. The presented methodology (using modern equipment) is based on measuring the electrical impedance characteristics of measured system. Construction material in this system behaves like a dielectric. So we investigate the properties of the dielectric. Indicator properties are frequency dependent physical electrical quantities.

  5. Improving the durability of cement fibre composite with the full use of recyclate

    The paper will analyze durability of various formulas of fibre composites with the cement matrix with the full use of recyclate on the basis of mechanical and physical-chemical tests of diffusion and permeation properties. The aim is to define a perspective formula of fibre composite with concrete recyclate resistant to the degradation of cement matrix caused by carbon dioxide and chlorides, i.e. a formula with higher durability.

  6. Influence of type of aggregate and concrete additives for concrete frost

    Work will focus on assessing the impact of the mineralogical composition, fines content and washable materials and aggregates various types of plasticizers and air-entraining agents for concrete frost resistance, especially tensile strength in bending.

  7. Possibilities research of new non-waste technologies of high-quality aerated concrete with renewable sources usage

    The main objective of thesis is to ensure the thorough lack of waste of new technology of production of autoclaved aerated concrete with focus on the usage of renewable raw materials. Emphasis will be placed on increasing the share of other alternative sources of silica raw materials originating from the newly processed database, which will not only ensure the high quality of the final products but also the sustainability of the autoclaved aerated concrete technology in the region.

  8. Prediction of the durability of fibre composites with cement matrix from the results of mechanical, physical and physical-chemical tests

    The proposed topic is focused on the optimization of the methodolody of estimating the durability of fibre concretes. Pore structure of concrete is of primary importance for its durability. The pore structure of concrete can described by a number of tests but not all of them are a suitable indicator of durability. The expected output are complex conclusions with an impact on the objectivity of using the test of concrete pore structure in relation to the estimate of durability.

  9. Progressive self-sensing materials

    The aim of this work will be a development of novel composite materials with enhanced electrical conductivity and investigation of their sensing properties which could be utilized in smart constructions in the connection to to Smart cities platform.

  10. Research and development of advanced earthing enhancing materials in the lightning and overvoltage protection system

    The main objective of thesis is research and development of new materials suitable for integration into the system of constructions protection from lightning strike and overvoltage. These materials would be able to be applied with the aim of improving earthing in the electricity distribution networks and in other applications, such as grounding of traction lines on railway tracks, grounding of microwave transmitters, gas pipelines and other types of product pipelines, earthing of buildings (residential and industrial).

  11. Research and development of highly resistant composites for chemically stressed building structures

    The main objective of thesis is research of new silica composites for remediation of chemically attacked and exerted building constructions. The composites have to meet specific demands of the exposure environments. They have to be waterproof and safely resistant to the mechanical, chemical, biological and other impacts of the flowing sewage waters and the aggressive effects of the surrounding settings.

  12. Research of influence of micronized lime stone on the quality of silicate composite matrix.

    The thesis will focus on studies of influence of micronized lime stone with various fineness and specific surface on the properties of both fresh and hardened cement mortar. The main target is optimization of hardened mortar density, impact on the character of microstructure and possible influence on newly formed hydration products.

  13. Research of possibilities of use of fluid fly ash in silicate composite materials.

    The thesis will focus on searching possibilities of optimal use of fluid fly ash for production of certain types of mixtures. The main target is testing possibilities of manufacture of base courses for roads, road stabilization and materials for diaphragm walls. Fluid fly ash should partly replace cement while required physico-mechanical and durability requirements are satisfied.

  14. Research on the development of new super-insulation materials based on alternative raw materials and their application in building structures

    Work will focus on the development and study of new insulators to be used for the manufacture of vacuum insulation panels (VIP) based on secondary and easy renewable raw sources (eg. waste and recycled textiles). The aim will be mapping out behavior of insulators under extremely reduced pressure and the development of new affordable core insulators for VIP. Additionally study of the life of insulators from the perspective of the so-called. "Outgassing" of insulators under extremely low pressure.

  15. Reuse of waste from production of composites based on silicate matrix and organic filler

    Work is subjected on cement-bonded composites research while utilization of waste from their production. Properties, pre-treatment and possibilities of the waste application into raw materials mixture will be assessed. Verifying of the physico-mechanical parameters of the modified boards, analysis and study of reactions which occur during structure formation of composites in consideration of various production conditions and types of input raw materials is a part of dissertation thesis as well.

  16. Study of composite building materials subjected to mechanical loading by means of electromagnetic and acoustic emission methods

    Acoustic (AE) and electromagnetic (EME) emission signal generation accompanies the formation of cracks in electrically non-conducting materials. The effect of the composite materiál composition and charactersitics to the EME and AE characteristics will be studied. The results of this study will be applied to the design of a new diagnostic method.

  17. Study of fracture surfaces of building materials and rock grounds

    The goal of the proposed research is to study experimental correlations between morphological irregularities of fracture surfaces and compressive strength of building materials or shear strength of rock joints. Microscopic technique along with 3D software projection will be used in combination with the mechanical assessment of compressive or shear strength.

  18. Study of physical-mechanical and durability characteristics of construction fibre concretes with use of alternating waste fibres

    Both organic and anorganic fibres from waste raw materials can be used purposefully in construction fibre concretes with extracted aggregate and concrete recyclate. The comparison of physical-mechanical and durability characteristics of fibre concretes with and without loading can contribute to estimating lifetime and ductility behaviour of fibre concretes of different formulations.

  19. Study of properties of fibre reinforced cement composites

    Possibilities of using glass and polymer fiber reinforcement in cement composites. Effect of fiber addition on composite properties (rheological properties, strength characteristics). Predicting and verifying the durability of fiber reinforced composites.

  20. Study of temperature resistance of glued wood joints

    The ability of heat resistance parameters of adhesives in relation to the fire resistance of glued bearing wood elements is not known yet. For various types of adhesives, it is assumed that experimental verification of the possible dependence of the temperature resistance of glued joint (temperature up to 200 ° C affecting the degradation of adhesives) with fire resistance of glued elements (temperature 1200 ° C with the curve according to the standard temperature curve according to ISO 834).

  21. Studying the effect of alkali-silica reactivity of aggregates on the durability of cement concrete pavement

    The work will focus on the causes of the collapse of concrete highway covers the influence of alkali - silica reaction aggregates. The review of the aggregates used in the construction of the motorway D1 and consequently their impact on the life guards. where appropriate, to reduce defects arising in this way.

    Forsterite is refractory material with high coefficient of thermal conductivity. Forsterite is not produced in Czech Republic. The effect of different technology of forsterite production (raw materials mixture, technology of shaping, sol-gel) on the physico-mechanical properties and microstructure.

  23. The monitoring behavior of building materials under mechanical loading by acoustic emission method

    Acoustic Emission Method is an unusual technique which describes only active defects or changes into structure arising as a consequence dangerous tension into structure. The method is appropriate to be used in homogenous structures as metal structures when cracks are highly active (generates sound). Its application in civil engineering is not so much used because building structures are inhomogeneous.

  24. Thermodynamic stability of AFt phases

    In research of thermodynamic stability of ettringite, hypothesis occured that ettringite is not stable under certain pH and/or temperature and moisture conditions. This work will therefore be focused on long-term monitoring of the morphology and mineralogical composition of both ettringite prepared by various procedures and ettringite affected by interaction with other substances.

  25. Using of Acoustic Methods to Assess the Effect of Composition of Cement Composites on the Process of Degradation Caused by Increased Temperature

    The proposed project will address acoustic methods such as acoustic emission, frequency inspection and nonlinear ultrasonic detection for rapid non-destructive testing of concrete degraded of high temperature. The results will be compared with the parameters obtained by ultrasonic detection, impedance spectroscopy, confocal microscopy, measurement of tensile bending strength, density.

  3. Development and research of behavior of insulating materials based on alternative raw sources under extremely reduced pressure

  4. Effect of burning cycle on the microstructure of refractories of two-component system Al2O3-SiO2.

    The aim of this PhD thesis is to study the influence of temperature and heat on the resulting microstructure of material. The density of the material, pore structure, mineralogical composition and internal structure of the material will be analyzed on the available high-end devices, which requires mastering the work with these devices as well.

  5. Functional coatings based on geopolymers

    Geopolymers are progressive high performance materials with improved resistence to high temperatures and aggressive agents. The aim of this work will be a development of novel coating materials based on geopolymer matrix which could be utilized as protective barriers against high temperature and aggressive media.

  7. Optimization of the composition of building objects based on the minimization of energy demand coming from the thermal system modelling

    Processes of thermal flow in building structures can be composition of material layers can be modified by the composition of material layers. The analysis of internal thermal and moisture processes and effective design of a structure is able to affect its energy demand substantially. This issue is also important for showing objects with controlled internal temperature.

    The task is focused on research into the use of waste materials, especially plastics or silicate recycled materials for use in construction elements. It is a contribution to sustainable development in the construction industry. The scope of work is to study the properties of heat-treated sewage recycled materials and optimize their performance in accordance with the requirements of specific building elements.
