Profile

The PhD study of study branch "Physical and Building Materials Engineering" is focused to a complex scientific training, to methods of individual scientific work and to knowledge development in the field of Building Materials Theory. The fundamental disciplines of the branch are Physics of Materials, Physical Chemistry of Silicates, Theory of Composite Materials, Microstructure of Building Materials, Durability and Rehabilitation of Materials and Structures, further Methods of Measurement and Diagnostics, Modeling of Physical Processes and Building Physics Tasks. From building technical applications especially the Concrete and Building Structures Rehabilitation, Moisture Rehabilitation, Heat-Technical Problems, Reclaiming of Steel and of Wooden Structures. The scientific training in this field is based basic theoretical disciplines of natural sciences and of theoretical scientific disciplines of relevant professional orientation. The graduate of PhD study is trained for asserting himself in development and research activities which enable creative solution of problems, of new progressive building materials development and their use in building structures. The basic character of this PhD education is the close connection both with scientific, research and development activities on the training workplace and in proper technological practice. The continuous active scientific activity is the qualification for possible engagement of graduates as members of the academic staffs at universities.

  1. Analysis of the thermal-moisture exposures influences onto the durability aspect of structural wood

    The doctoral study will be focused onto the examination of the biological resistance of the built-in structural timber. The influence of the tree species, the type of elements and the wood macrostructure on biological resistance at different thermal humidity expositions will be evaluated. Experimental work will be carried out both in the laboratory conditions and with built-in wooden elements on real structures. The moisture distribution along the cross section of the element will be monitored.

  2. Application of computer tomography in acoustic testing of building materials

    Acoustic tomography is a method that makes possible to localize inhomogeneities in medium under investigation. The objective of the study consists in calculating cavities in materials by means of acoustic tomography methods and determining the resolution power of these methods.

  3. Application of nondestructive testing methods the properities of masonry elements

    The goal is to create conditions for the detection of single parameters of building materials using nondestructive testing methods. Preference will be test-rebound hardness testing method, ultrasonic impulse method and resonance method.

  4. Cement based composites with a high content of secondary raw materials for demanding exposure conditions

    The work will be focused on the research of cement composite or polymer modified composite with a high amount of secondary raw materials for demanding conditions of exposure. It will have to meet high standards of resistance to chemical and mechanical stress. An important aspect will be the high proportion of secondary raw materials in the mixture. Main goal of the thesis is to replace up to 100% of filler and 50% of binder while maintaining high composite resistance.

  5. Development and research of behavior of insulating materials based on alternative raw sources under extremely reduced pressure

    Work will focus on the development and study of new insulators to be used for the manufacture of vacuum insulation panels (VIP) based on secondary and easy renewable raw sources (eg. waste and recycled textiles). The aim will be mapping out behavior of insulators under extremely reduced pressure and the development of new affordable core insulators for VIP. Additionally study of the life of insulators from the perspective of the so-called. "Outgassing" of insulators under extremely low pressure.

  6. Development of modern insulation materials based on by-products

    The work will deal with the use of waste materials, especially from the textile industry for the production of new thermal and acoustic insulation materials with higher added value. The aim of the work will be to describe the structure of these insulators, to determine the dependence of individual key properties on the thickness of the insulant, the density, the thickness and length of the fibers and on their type. New types of thermal and acoustic insulation materials will be proposed.

  7. Interaction study of polymeric additives with puzzolana active admixture in polymer modified composites

    The research will be focused on the study of changing properties of cementitious composites using polymeric additives (particularly redispersible polymeric powders) and puzzolana active admixture containing amorphous SiO2. Interactions of these additives and admixtures influence the properties of fresh mixture, hydration process and properties of hardened product.

  8. Physical description of concrete in the external electric field

    The external electric field causes changes in structure of the particle of the concrete, which can be non-destructive and help diagnose the state or structure. Physical description of concrete from a dielectric point of view is due to its inhomogeneity as a less developed area of research and gives space to original research.

  9. Preparation of high-quality sulphate binders by non-pressurized methods

    The subject deals with the study of the production of high strength sulfate binders, in particular alpha hemihydrate, without the use of pressure equipment. Binder preparation is possible either by dehydration of gypsum in various types of solutions, and possibly by direct synthesis. Both technologies are not yet fully described and understood.

  10. Radiative heat transfer in interiors of buildings

    The recent building thermal technology determines heat losses on the basis of thermal conduction through the envelopes of buildings. There is a possibility to generalize the procedure and to include the transfer of radiative and convective heat transfers. This represents a complex ab initio computation. The radiative and convective heat transfers may be coupled and a system of transcendent equations may be formed. Such a system may be solved e.g. by the Newton iterative method. The Ph.D. thesis should be aimed at creating a general procedure for such computations and applying it to a chosen room of a family house.

  11. Research of possibilities of use of fluid fly ash in silicate composite materials.

    The thesis will focus on searching possibilities of optimal use of fluid fly ash for production of certain types of mixtures. The main target is testing possibilities of manufacture of base courses for roads, road stabilization and materials for diaphragm walls. Fluid fly ash should partly replace cement while required physico-mechanical and durability requirements are satisfied.

  12. Study of composite building materials subjected to mechanical loading by means of electromagnetic and acoustic emission methods

    Acoustic (AE) and electromagnetic (EME) emission signal generation accompanies the formation of cracks in electrically non-conducting materials. The effect of the composite materiál composition and charactersitics to the EME and AE characteristics will be studied. The results of this study will be applied to the design of a new diagnostic method.

  13. Study of fracture surfaces of building materials and rock grounds

    The goal of the proposed research is to study experimental correlations between morphological irregularities of fracture surfaces and compressive strength of building materials or shear strength of rock joints. Microscopic technique along with 3D software projection will be used in combination with the mechanical assessment of compressive or shear strength.

  14. Study of physico-mechanical and durability characteristics of construction fibre concretes with use of alternating waste fibres

    Both organic and anorganic fibres from waste raw materials can be used purposefully in construction fibre concretes with extracted aggregate and concrete recyclate. The comparison of physical-mechanical and durability characteristics of fibre concretes with and without loading can contribute to estimating lifetime and ductility behaviour of fibre concretes of different formulations.

  15. Study of properties of fibre reinforced cement composites

    Possibilities of using glass, basalt and polymer fiber reinforcement in cement composites. Effect of fiber addition on composite properties (rheological properties, strength characteristics). Predicting and verifying the durability of fiber reinforced composites.

  16. Study of the properties of repair materials using non-destructive testing methods

    The aim is to study and create conditions for the basic parameters of repair materials using non-destructive testing methods. Preference will these test methods-rebond method, ultrasonic pulse method and the resonance method. The work will be focused in two main areas, the study of factors affecting the results of non-destructive methods of measurement and processing relationship between the parameters of non-destructive testing and physico-mechanical properties.

  17. Temperature resistance analysis of glued wood

    The ability of heat resistance parameters of adhesives in relation to the fire resistance of glued bearing wood elements is not known yet. For various types of adhesives, it is assumed that experimental verification of the possible dependence of the temperature resistance of glued joint (temperature up to 200 ° C affecting the degradation of adhesives) with fire resistance of glued elements (temperature 1200 ° C with the curve according to the standard temperature curve according to ISO 834).

  18. The study of the properties of fly ash from flue gas denitrification process with the utilization in building materials

    There are many known ways of utilization of fly ash but also the FBC ash at present. For building materials frequently used fly ash but will be in the coming years significantly affected by the flue gas denitrification process. The work thus will study ways to customize your ashes or the entire production technology of building materials to avoid negative impacts on the environment.

  19. Use of alternating electric field for the assessment of the physical properties of building materials

    The main objective is to make a detailed comparison of the electrical parameters of thermally loaded concrete samples with changes in the structure. The presented methodology (using modern equipment) is based on measuring the electrical impedance characteristics of measured system. Construction material in this system behaves like a dielectric. So we investigate the properties of the dielectric. Indicator properties are frequency dependent physical electrical quantities.

  20. Use of waste from production of composites based on silicate matrix and organic filler

    Work is subjected on cement-bonded composites research while utilization of waste from their production. Properties, pre-treatment and possibilities of the waste application into raw materials mixture will be assessed. Verifying of the physico-mechanical parameters of the modified boards, analysis and study of reactions which occur during structure formation of composites in consideration of various production conditions and types of input raw materials is a part of dissertation thesis as well.

  21. Using methods of nonlinear acoustic spectroscopy for nondestructive testing of concrete damaged by high temperatures

    Based on the study of nonlinear acoustic effects, new defectoscopic and diagnostic methods have been proposed, some of which are potentially also suitable for defectoscopy of building materials. There are a number of these methods. The aim of the work will be the selection of suitable methods of nonlinear acoustic spectroscopy, construction of measuring devices and experimental verification of their usability for non-destructive testing of concrete damaged by high temperatures.

  22. Using of Acoustic Methods to Assess the Effect of Composition of Cement Composites on the Process of Degradation Caused by Increased Temperature

    The proposed project will address acoustic methods such as acoustic emission, frequency inspection and nonlinear ultrasonic detection for rapid non-destructive testing of concrete degraded of high temperature. The results will be compared with the parameters obtained by ultrasonic detection, impedance spectroscopy, confocal microscopy, measurement of tensile bending strength, density.

  23. In specific applications, emphasis is placed on the abrasion resistance of concrete (XM Concrete Class). As an example, concrete surfaces that come in contact with flowing liquids or solids can be named. Monitoring the effect of various types of admixtures in terms of the possibility of affecting the resistance of concrete to abrasion. Study of the ability to influence the resistance of concrete against abrasion using the used aggregate and its composition.

  1. Application of acoustic methods to assessing the the status parameter lightweight polymer-cementitious repair mortars exposed to high temperatures

    The aim is to use acoustic methods: Impact-Echo, acoustic emission and nonlinear ultrasonic spectroscopy for rapid non-destructive testing status lightweight polymer-cementitious repair mortars exposed to high temperatures. Will be investigated repair mortars polymer cement with modified. The aim of the modification of the composition will achieve the parameters characteristic of fire-resistant repair mortars. They will be used polymeric fibers polyolefin.

  4. Influence of genesis and type of the limestone on the properties of CaO

    This study will deal with the research of influence of age, genesis, morphology and composition of limestone on its reactivity and decarbonisation process. In particular, the rate and course of decarbonation will be studied, as well as the reactivity by the Bischov-Uhde method. The aim of the thesis is to try to define the relationship of the properties of the raw material to its reactivity and the rate and course of decarbonation and the development of the crystalline lattice of CaO.

  5. Mullite Grog Microstructure

    The aim of this PhD thesis is to study the influence of temperature and heat on the resulting microstructure of material. The density of the material, pore structure, mineralogical composition and internal structure of the material will be analyzed on the available high-end devices, which requires mastering the work with these devices as well.

  7. Physico-mechanical and durability characteristics of concrete laying elements with glass recyclate of photovoltaic panels

    The glass surface photovoltaic panels have a lifespan of approximately 20 years. Recycled glass is created by crushing this area. One of the potential application is the substitution of defined fraction of dense aggregate by glass recyclate for production of concrete blocks. The results of a number of mechanical and physico-chemical tests of alternative formulations shall decide on the use of concretes with the glass recyclate and shall help with the assessment of efficiency of production.

  8. Research of influence of micronized lime stone on the quality of silicate composite matrix.

    The thesis will focus on studies of influence of micronized lime stone with various fineness and specific surface on the properties of both fresh and hardened cement mortar. The main target is optimization of hardened mortar density, impact on the character of microstructure and possible influence on newly formed hydration products.

  13. Study of Refractory Ceramic Pore Structure

    Resistance and durability of refractory ceramic materials at high temperatures are influenced by their pore structure. The research will focus on the study of the microstructure of thermally insulating material with emphasis on their pore structure. Various analytical methods, suitable for determining apparent, closed porosity and pore size distribution, will be used. The research will search for connection between the character of the pore structure and material thermal-technical properties.

  15. Studying the effect of alkali-silica reactivity of aggregates on the durability of cement concrete pavement

    The work will focus on the causes of the collapse of concrete highway covers the influence of alkali - silica reaction aggregates. The review of the aggregates used in the construction of the motorway D1 and consequently their impact on the life guards. where appropriate, to reduce defects arising in this way.

  16. Synthesis and determination of the properties of pure Portland clinker phases and their polymorphs

    The work will mainly deal with synthesis of major clinker minerals, which are C3S, C2S, C3A and C4AF and their polymorphs. The aim will be laboratory preparation of the pure phases and analysis of their properties. In particular, the crystal lattice, its defects and crystallinity will be studied. Moreover attention will pay to the hardness, fission and brittleness of individual minerals.

  17. The application of pulse-echo methods to assessing the condition of degraded building materials

    The objective of the thesis will be an application of the non-destructive acoustic methods to a fast testing of the condition of degraded building materials. The results of the study will be compared with those obtained by classical methods: compressive and tensile strengths (simple tension, transversal tension, flexural tensile strength), static and dynamic modulus of elasticity.

  18. The monitoring behavior of building materials under mechanical loading by acoustic emission method

    Acoustic Emission Method is an unusual technique which describes only active defects or changes into structure arising as a consequence dangerous tension into structure. The method is appropriate to be used in homogenous structures as metal structures when cracks are highly active (generates sound). Its application in civil engineering is not so much used because building structures are inhomogeneous.
