The ability of the doctoral student of an independent scientific work on the selected topic, familiarity with scientific work methodology, especially the problem analysis and synthesis of the findings and its creative application in the proposed solution.

Key learning outcomes

The graduate is ready for an independent scientific and research work in the field of architecture and urban design theory, is able to solve practical problems in the field of architecture and urban design independently and at a scientific level, publishes outcomes of both practical and theoretical activities, also in any of the world languages, is able to teach at a higher-education institution.

Entry requirements

The master degree qualification in the branch of architecture or similar achieved at a higher-education institution in the Czech Republic or a school of architecture abroad.
Passing successfully the admission examination during which the applicant proves his/her interest and expert knowledge for a research work.

  1. Architectural elements: structure and materiality, perpetual features and meanings

    Structural elements, their substance, materiality and form as primary semiotic elements; meaning, perpetuality, features and their meanings; Culture, code, genotype and phenotype; Stability, vitality and their interaction; semiotic analysis of structural elements from classical structures to contemporary trends.

    The dissertation is focused on architectural language. The issue will be discussed from the artistic, technological, historiographical, sociological and psychological point of view, with the basis in contemporary theory of architecture.

  4. Architecture Elements; Path, space in between public and private

    Functional ensemble of non-personal, primary and normative communication areas and its individual elements; Consequences of processes, phenomena and the influence of aspects of vitality and stability on the organization, form and substance, and on its composition of the socio-cultural and socio-economic aspects.

  5. New function in historical object - potential and usage limits

    Systematic study specifies the use of historical objects and their files in connection with the principles of historical restoration. Potential and limits of the monitored objects in the search phase for the appropriate function and the optimum level of operational load.

  6. Traditionalism in architecture of the 19th, 20th and 21st century

    The dissertation is focused on traditional form languages in architecture from the 19th through the 21st century. The subject might be the analysis of the work of particular architect/s, architecture in specific region, or application of traditional design in the contemporary architecture.
