Programme: Audio Engineering

Profile

The study programme provides interdisciplinary studies for BSc degree in audio engineering. The programme focuses on the education of professionals - sound engineers and audio technicians with technical and artistic overview in the area of audio equipment, audio signal processing, music direction and studio practice. Students are educated in the field of audio electronics, studio equipment and music theory, and gain practical experience in studio practice.
Instruction is provided primarily by the Department of Telecommunications FEEC and the Faculty of Music of JAMU in Brno. A wide range of optional courses along with individual technical and artistic projects and the bachelor’s final work enable students to focus more closely on the area of studio audio engineering, audio technology, analogue and digital processing of audio signals and future study of programmes focused on performing arts.
The study is divided into three years. In the first year, students gain basic knowledge in mathematics, physics, electrical engineering, and music theory. The knowledge is broaden in specialized subjects during the second year of study. Instruction in the third year is focused on practical use and application of this knowledge and studio practice.

Key learning outcomes

The graduates are trained in the area of audio equipment and its utilization in the studio practice. The area of the knowledge extends from the range of sound waves and audio signals through their analog and digital processing to design and realization of audio equipment and systems, from musical theory through instrumentation to sound recording practice. He knows the principle, structure and operation of various analog and digital audio equipment and systems.
The graduates are qualified in area of audio electronics, acoustics, electroacoustics, theory of music and instrumentation. The graduates have also knowledge in area of studio audio engineering, sound recording practice and technical realization of audio equipment and systems.
Graduates will find application as professionals in broadcasting, post-production and recording studios, theatres, in the staging musical performances, multimedia production, in companies engaged in the production, sale and service of audio and music electronics, in companies engaged in the design of studios and space for audio production, with complex installation and technology, etc. They are prepared to perform lower executive or managerial functions in all these areas. The markedly practice-oriented university education makes it possible for the graduates to prove useful in audio engineering practice or in sound recording practice, and provides a good basis for complementation of theoretical knowledge by subsequent MSc studies.
