Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will be made familiar with general vocabulary for the workplace, as well as grammar structures for everyday communication at intermediate level. Students will acquire the language corresponding to the level B1 according to the "Common European Framework of Reference: Learning, Teaching, Assessment" set by the Council of Europe.

Prerequisites

Course is intended for students who are familiar with the language at pre-intermediate level, as well as with grammar and vocabulary corresponding to the course A5.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Language instruction as an extension of basic professional curriculum.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

To pass this course it is necessary, apart from active participation in the class and individual home preparation, to fulfil and present tasks given and to pass the credit test, which is divided into three parts written on pre-set dates throughout the semester. In case the benchmark is not achieved, there is a possibility for the student to resit the test. Finally, students’ work in the e-learning support of the course and elaborating a CV are also reflected in the overall course assessment. The maximum scores are 50 points for the tests, 12 points for the e-learning course, and 5 points for the presentation. In order to fulfil the credit requirements students must earn a minimum of 45 points in total.

Aims

The course is intended to teach English as a foreign language with focus on practical, everyday communication in a wide range of engineering branches.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Attendance at seminars is compulsory and is systematically checked by the teacher. Students are allowed to miss two seminars.
