Satellite and Navigation Systems

FEKT-MPC-DNSAcad. year: 2021/2022

The proposed subject is focused on communiaction systems using satellites and methods of satellite navigation. The goal is to present students specific techniques of satellite communication, and to explain principles of global navigation satellite systems and methods of localization.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The graduate is able to: (a) write down the communication equation and explain a meaning of individual parameters; (b) characterize parameters of a satellite orbit and explain a procedure of calculations of satellite location prediction; (c) define basic types of satellite orbits and evaluate their advantages and disadvantages; (d) clarify effects disturbing the satellite motion; (e) enumerate the satellite link budget in an uplink and a downlink, in case of clear sky and during rain conditions; (f) describe basic features of satellite communication systems providing fixed (VSAT, DBS, Intelsat, Eutelsat) and mobile (satellite telephony - Iridium, Inmarsat, Thuraya) services; (g) explain principles of satellite navigation; (h) describe basic features of global satellite navigation systems GPS, Glonass and Galileo; (i) and to apply GNSS in real systems.

Prerequisites

A student who register the course should be able to: i) To build a simple program in Matlab; ii) Apply a radiocommunicaion equation.
