Czech language

A preferred approach in the course Czech Language is a direct method using audio-visual teaching aids. Lessons taught by a lecturer include work with a coursebook, workbook, supplementary exercises, group work, and interpretation of read and spoken texts. Where necessary, students can use English.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The course graduate:

- acquires a limited vocabulary and can respond to basic social phrases: introducing themselves and others, providing basic information about themselves and their family, shopping, ordering in the restaurant, asking for and giving directions in the city, etc.

- knows basic facts about the Czech Republic, Czech life and institutions, famous Czech personalities, and Czech culture

- understands the structure of the Czech declension

- uses accusative-case singular and plural nouns in everyday conversation

- knows the simplified system of conjugation of verbs, and conjugates the most frequent regular and irregular verbs in the indicative of the present tense, and some verbs in the past tense

- knows and uses modal verbs in the present indicative or in the conditional.

The subject knowledge on the secondary school level is required.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations - a direct method using audio-visual teaching aids. Where necessary, students can use English.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

A written test or an oral exam according to the teacher’s requirements and regular attendance in lessons (75 %) are necessary for successful completion of the course.

Course curriculum

Introduction to the study of the Czech language; Czech vocal and consonant system
Introducing, getting to know people, greetings, polite phrases; verbs “být, dělat” (“to be, to do”) + negative, grammatical gender, conjugation -á, numbers 0–10
Asking and giving directions in the city, conversation at the station; verbs “mluvit, rozumět, vědět, vidět, muset” (“to talk, understand, know, see, must”), conjugation -í, adverbial phrases “nahoře, dole” (“at the top/at the bottom, up/down”), numbers 11–100
At the restaurant conversation; verb “mít rád” (“to like”), food and drinks, nominative-case singular nouns, conjugation -e, numbers 100–1000
My family; pronouns “můj, moje, tvůj, tvoje…” (“my, your…”), pronouns “jaký, jaká, jaké” (“what, which, how”), adjectives, verbs “studovat, pracovat” (“to study, to work”), accusative-case singular nouns, conjugation -ovat
When will we meet? Date, hour, day, week, month, year, modal verbs “chtít, moct, muset” (“want, can, must”), expression “rád dělat” (“like doing”), Christmas
Famous Czechs; past tense, verbs “znát, vědět, umět” (“know, can”), irregular verbs

Aims

The aim of the course is to acquire the Czech language at the A1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Students can understand and respond appropriately in common communication situations, such as everyday conversations, shopping, arranging accommodation, using public transport, and giving directions in the city. Students should be able to describe their place of residence and the people they know using simple sentences and phrases.

The content and forms of instruction in the evaluated course are specified by a regulation issued by the lecturer responsible for the course and updated for every academic year.
