Methods of Scientific and Professional Work

FSI-ZSEAcad. year: 2020/2021

Students prepare a proposal of a professional project on the example of a diploma thesis with all the essentials that are required in practice from project design as: project annotation, state of the art including its analysis, definition of specific aims, design of procedures for project solutions including instrumentation, time schedule, outputs projects, justification of necessity. Emphasis is placed on the professional style of the text, compliance with citation rules according to ISO 690, typographic rules including the placement of the text in the required template. The course builds on the bachelor's thesis and theoretically prepares students for professional scientific work.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

 knowledge of the structure of the scientific project design,
 ability to search for relevant information in bibliographic databases and to cite these sources correctly,
 ability to define the objectives of the project on the basis of a synthesis of shortcomings or missing knowledge in the field,
 ability to plan the time schedule of the project in realistic terms,
 ability to design appropriate procedures or conceptual approaches to solve the project.

- Basic knowledge of research methodology and scientific work acquired during bachelor studies.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Criteria for obtaining graded credit:
 test (max. 20 points),
 partial tasks (max. 25 points),
 final work - project proposal (max. 35 points),
 final presentation (20 points),
 none of the tasks may be graded F,
 a total of up to 100 points can be obtained, the final classification is determined according to the CTS scale.

Aims

Graduates will be able to compile a proposal for their own scientific or professional project.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Lectures: attendance is mandatory and controlled by the teacher.
Exercises: participation is mandatory and controlled by the teacher; unexcused absence is a reason for not granting credit; a maximum of one excused absence in advance is allowed; compensation for one-off absence is fully within the competence of the teacher. The teacher performs a continuous check of the students' presence and basic knowledge.
