Chemistry of Building Materials

Select chapters of basic and physical chemistry, chemical bonds, kinetics of chemical reactions, thermochemistry, phase balances, dispersion systems, dissociation, pH value, hydrolysis, and electrochemistry.
Natural and secondary raw materials for building industry. Chemistry of glass. Airy and hydraulic binders, production, chemical properties, setting and hardening. Corrosion of hardened binders and aggregates in the composite materials.
Chemical properties of ceramics, chemical defects of ceramic products.
Chemical and electrochemical properties of metals, their corrosion and protection.
Chemical properties of drinking, water, waste water for concrete production and impacting water. Water treatment. Air, air pollutions, atmosphere.
Select chapters of organic chemistry. Chemical composition and properties of wood, bitumen, carbon polymers and silicones.

Atomic structure of the elements, periodic table, basic chemical laws, inorganic terminology, simple stoichiometric calculations, basic terms of organic chemistry, overview of the hydrocarbons and their derivates, principals of organic compounds nomenclature

Course curriculum

1. Atomic structure, nuclear stability, radioactivity.
2. Quantum numbers, Pauli principle, the Aufbau principle, Hund´s rool, periodicity of the elements properties, periodic table.
3. Atomic and molecular weights, chemical reactions, stoichiometric calculations, chemical bonds.
4. Chemical kinetics, reaction rates, activation complex, catalytic reactions, thermochemistry, Hess and Lavoisier laws.
5. The phase equilibrium, gases, liquids, solid substances, crystalography. Dispersed arrangement – suspenses, aerosols, emulsions, colloid and regular solutions.
6. Properties of distinguished inorganic compounds of carbon, silicon, sulphur, nitrogen and phosphorus.
7. Chemical compozition and proprties of primary and secondary raw materials for building industry. Production, composition and properties of gypsum.
8. Production, composition and properties of hydraulic binders – Portland cement, high alumina cement and hydraulic lime.
9. Chemistry and degradation of glass. Corosion of binders, protection against degradation processes.
10. Electrochemistry. Galvanic cells, standard reduction potentials, electrolysis. Metals and metal corrosion.
11. Chemistry of air and water.
12. Chemical composition od wood and deterioration of timber constructions. Composition and chemical properties of bitumens.
13. Composition and properties based on carbon and silicon chains, chemical durability.

The choice chapters of general and physical chemistry that are in relation to the chemistry of building materials.
Chemistry of inorganic and organic building materials, their chemical composition, processes of the formation of solid structure and the chemical corrosion processes.
