Renovation and Restoration of Historic Buildings

The lectures and tutorials are focused on the legislature concerning the protection of monuments, cultural heritage and its changes in historic style periods, and on the review of some technical means of building technology. The aim is to make the students acquainted with the methods of protection of monuments, to provide them with the knowledge needed for architectural design in historical environment, to teach them the ways of preserving, restoring and finding new use of cultural monuments. These knowledge and skills are necessary for an architect, with view to the high percentage of building activities implemented in historical environment, and the increasing emphasis on its protection and preservation.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Completion of the subject enables the students to orientate themselves in the problems of monument care and protection. After a certain practice, the student should be able to develop a professional concept of intervention into a historic building, and when facing such a task, should be able to work out renewal plans and to supervise their execution.

Prerequisites

The student is expected to have orientational knowledge of the history of architecture (antiquity - at least baroque), to know the statical principles of the basic tectonic systems
(vault, support and load, wall, skeleton), traditional building materials, and the basic structures of building construction (foundation, roofs, floors, openings, surface treatment).

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Examination in a written form. In the overall point evaluation (max. 100 points) is included
the evaluation of seminar assignment (max. 15 points).

1 Introduction - development of monument protection and conservation.
2 Organisation and classification of monuments. Monument protection legislation.
3 International institutions, documents and forms of cultural heritage protection.
4 Characteristics of architectural and urban heritage - kinds of heritage.
5 Transformation of works of architecture in historic style periods - castles,
chateaus,church buildings.
6 Transformation of works of architecture in historic style periods - palaces, town
houses, urban context.
7 Contemporary care of monuments (conservation, repair, renewal, restitution, replica,
relocation, conversion).
8 Protection of historic settlements.
9 City of the 19th century, industrial heritage - potential conservation methods.
10 City of the 1st half of the 20th century, its architecture.
11 Contemporary architecture in historic environment - genius loci, environmental
autenticity, new building, detail.
12 Historic structures
13 Building substance of a monument, its failures,contemporary technologies and
structures.

Aims

The aim is to acquaint the students with the methods of monument care and protection, to impart them the knowledge needed for architectural design in historic environment, and to familiarise them with the methods of renewal, conservation and conversion of cultural monuments.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Continuos monitoring of theoretical knowledge, based on a test in the seventh week of teaching
Required is 50 % attendance of tutorials and solo field work.
