Course detail

Structures and Indoor Environment of Buildings

FA-KPR-KAcad. year: 2020/2021

The course consists of two blocks that deal with load bearing structures and the indoor environment of buildings.
The course broadens students´ knowledge on the indoor environment, energy consumption of buildings and economic efficiency of building proposals while providing required comfort for the users and complying with the current requirements of technical and energy consumption legislation.
The second block deepens students´ knowledge of designing load bearing structures, mostly bridges, that are illustrated on outstanding structures that set the trend of development and push the limits of construction feasibility.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

– Students will be able to design an optimal proposal of a building while respecting the user and architectural requirements.
– Students will respect the current trends and requirements on energy performance of buildings.
– Students will be able to design the load bearing structure of a bridge.
– Students will gain knowledge on how to design the concept of structure for buildings which exceed the common standard of construction.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The content is presented in oral lectures. During the semester, students work on and consult a seminar paper on a selected topic agreed by the lecturer.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Evaluation consists of submission of seminar paper and end-of-course written test which covers the topics of the whole semester. Students submit it in electronic format (PDF) and consult the seminar paper with the lecturer throughout the semester. The final written test covers the topics presented at the lectures; and to complete the test successfully, students need to get at least 50 % of the total number of marks.

Course curriculum

1. Introduction, overview of current legislation, concepts and trends in energy performance of buildings and indoor environment
2. Summary of construction and building physics requirements applied on buildings in order to provide required quality of indoor environment - HVAC, acoustics, daylighting and insolation
3. The concept of low energy, passive and nearly zero energy building; the legislation and requirements
4. Energy performance of buildings in terms of general technical requirements on construction - energy performance certificate of building, energy performance certification of buildings in CR and other countries
5. The Energy Management Act, energy assessment and its application in subsidized projects
6. Alternative sources of energy and their impact on the total energy balance of a building, economic efficiency of energy saving measures and selected building technologies
7. Structure as an essential component of architecture
8. Outline of the structural systems of the 19th and 20th century
9. Structural systems of the 21st century
10. Extreme structures in terms of vertical and horizontal dimensions
11. Design of bridge structure - substructure (material, concept, solution, design requirements)
12. Beam, arch, suspended and cable-stayed bridges I
13. Beam, arch, suspended and cable-stayed bridges II

Work placements

Aims

1. The course presents the topic of building environment in the context of relevant disciplines: energy performance, acoustics and lighting. It focuses on the energy performance in relation to the current legislation, and on the integration of energy performance and building physics disciplines. Also the Energy Management Act and its application when designing new buildings and renovations is presented.
2. It is the mission of architects to contribute by the knowledge of terminology, structural system, and requirements of technical solution to the realisation of buildings, including bridges. The knowledge gained in this course should complete the information in this field. The principal part of the course will be focused on the bridge structures in architecture in order to introduce existing possibilities of the design with regards to material capacities and the significance of the selection of the structural system.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Participation at lectures is not compulsory.
